The volleyball tournament of the World University Games is coming to an end in the Chinese city of Chengdu. Today, August 6, Ukrainian volleyball players played their final match for the seventh-eighth place.
Serhii Kovalenko's team met with the Portuguese national team.
The starting part of the game was equal: both teams were getting used to each other. However, in the end, the Portuguese took the initiative and won the first set with a minimal advantage - 23:25.
The second set was complex for the Ukrainians from the beginning (3:8 – 6:12). Having achieved a double advantage, the Portuguese felt even more confident and relaxed, eventually winning another set - 19:25.
The next part of the game was entirely controlled by Serhii Kovalenko's wards (9:6 - 16:11 - 20:14). They were more agile on the block and in the attack, and also showed a good reception and a good game in defense - 25:18.
In the fourth set, the Ukrainians were again in the role of catching ups (6:11) but were able to "break" the opponent and equalize the score in sets - 25:23 and 2:2.
But our team did not have enough strength for a successful tie-break (4:4 – 4:7). The Portuguese managed to keep the advantage (8:12) until the end of the shortest set - 10:15 and 2:3 in favor of the Portuguese national team.
Dmytro Yanchuk (17 points) and Bohdan Mazenko (17 points) were the most productive players in the Ukrainian national team.

So, according to the results of the World University Games, the Ukrainian student volleyball team took 8th place.
In the finals of the volleyball tournament, as in 2019, Italy and Poland will meet each other, and China and Iran will fight for the "bronze".
